I walked over to strawberry creek with the intention of taking a pic of the waterfall, But as I watched the water spill over the rocks I notice these cool patterns. I slowed the shutter speed in zoom in on the water on the rocks. Results: very cool abstract.

I was looking out the window at the first rain of the winter season here in Cali. I suddenly notice the patterns the raindrops made on the window pane. Some of the drops appeared as if they were frozen, while others remind me of broken glass or spider veins . Nice abstract.

Photo Walkabout: Mountain View Cemetery

I spent the day at Mountain View cemetery.   I grew up a couple ofblocks from this place and I use to walk the grounds all the time but never paytoo much attention to the history it held.   This place is huge and thereare so many winding roads that I got lost trying to get back to the mainone.   It's an awesome place to go for a walk or a hike and it'sfilled with so much amazing history that there is an official docent tour thathappens twice a month. The main image below is of Gothic Chapel. Not sure how it got that name. I couldn't go inside the chapel but wasable to take a few images through the front door.

      One the main section at thecemetery is “Millionaires Row” where some of California's wealthiest andhistorical people are buried. Millionaires Row sits high up on a hilland has some of the largest crypts in the cemetery, not to mention amagnificent view. Some of the names I recognized there were; WarrenBechtel, Charles Crocker, Freda Ehrmann, J.A Folger and Domingo Ghirardelli.
The other section I visited today was the “Civil War Veterans” section. Therewere a few other sections I wanted to see but ran out of time.

This is a series that I've wanted to shoot for over a year. I thinkI’ll do one more trip before it's complete.

The other thing I learn today was the cemetery was design by famed architectFredrick Law Olmsted who also designed New York City’s Central Park and much ofStanford University and UC Berkeley.
I had a great time walking around and talking to the daily walkers andgetting a great history lesson from them.

Went to Benicia today to shoot the Sunset. I got there early so I decided to walked around the marina. While on my way back to my sunset spot, I notice the full moon between these two palm trees. I got some nice shots of the sunset but this was my favorite of the day.

Nothing special about this tree. I just like the way the light from the setting sun and the tree branches created streaks of orange light around the tree trunk. As I was walking toward this tree, it look as if fire was traveling down and around the trunk.

Spotted this leaf on my way back from lunch. I didn't have my camera with me, but my blackberry did a good job of capturing the detail of this leaf. The veins were so red that it made the leaf appear as if it were bleeding. The spot at the top is where is was wounded. It's a little blurry but I like it.

While out on my morning walk, I pass by this bare tree. The branches were pretty interesting. They remind me of an abstract drawing or ink blots.

I was on my way to lunch and notice this large palm leaf backlit by the sun. I thought the lines and the texture of the leaf was kinda cool. I converted it to black and white and added a little grain. My first photo for the photo52 Challenge.

Yesterday I met up with fellow photographers; Julie, Andy, Dimitry and Sanjeev to photograph the sunset from Vista point. Unfortunately mother nature and the fog had other ideas. We didn't get the sunset we were hoping for, but we got some cool night shots of the fog rolling in over the Golden Gate from Battery Spencer.

A Walk on the Pier

Went out to the Berkeley Pier last night. The last time I walk this pier, I was in the 7th grade. The sunset was beautiful and it added a little warmth to the nippy weather. The fishermen were out with their lines cast. One guy caught a shark. Later that night the same guy hook a stingray on his line but it got away.

I drove through the Mountain View cemetery today, and the groundskeepers were setting up the Annual Holiday Circle of lights. Some people think the cemetery is a odd place for a Christmas display. Maybe so but they have one of the best Christmas displays in the bay area. They added a few new displays this year. Will be back for the official opening next month.

Sunday Drive along the backroads

It was a gorgeous weekend in Cali. Yesterday I stayed indoors and studied. Today I couldn't resist a nice long drive up to Napa. I put away the books, packed a small lunch and off I went along the back roads hoping to find some interesting things to shoot and maybe some fall colors.

Driving along I notice the shadows from the telephone lines on the road. I thought they were pretty cool. I pulled over an took a few shots. Several people stopped and asked me what I was photographing. My reply: "The shadows on the pavement made by the telephone wires"
One person said "cool shot". The others looked a little confused lol!

Finally made it to Napa. Didn't see a lot of fall colors but I did find a few leaves and of course some grapes. : )

Went on a photo outing to Napa to photograph the mustard fields. The mustard was just starting to bloom and wasn't quite as photographic. Stopped at the Darioush winery to photograph the beautiful columns. The first thing I noticed was the shadows on the columns and the dark angry sky. The shadows on the columns looked like men with their heads bowed. I thought the couple was a nice effect too.

Two days ago while out on my walk, I went to take a picture with my P&S and it would not click. At first I thought it was the batteries, so I install fresh ones, still nothing. I googled the problem and tried a few possible solutions, still nothing. Well I remove the batteries put it back in it's case and forgot about it. Today I came home and decided to try one more time. Installed fresh batteries, press the power button, Tah Dah! Presto it works. Took several shots, all good. Not sure what happen, but I'm glad it's working, I did not feel researching a replacement.

I spotted this little guy on railing while out on my walk. Although it was sunny today, the temperature was in the 40's and it was chilly. He kept moving into the sunlight as the sun was setting. I shot this with my P&S at ISO 400, the noise is terrible.

The Story of Buddy

This is a picture of Buddy. Now you may be thinking to yourself "Just a picture of a squirrel" But you see Buddy is not your average squirrel. Sure he will come near you when he wants some nuts or acorns as most squirrels do, but Buddy acts more like a dog or cat. He comes to the office door everyday between 12 noon and 12:15 and he's always on time. In this picture Buddy is peering through the glass door looking for Loretta, our office manager because she has not given him his treat for the day. She’s late and he's not happy. After waiting a few minutes he jumps down on ground puts his face against the glass. He will then scratch the glass the get your attention. If you go to the door he will wait as if saying “where’s my treat?” I wanted to take a picture of him with his face against the glass, but by the time I went got my P&S he had jump back on the ledge. When she finally takes him his treat he gets all happy and follows her to where she put his treat, all the while he's making that chattering noise. Now Buddy is a somewhat selfish squirrel. He will not share with his friends. He chases them away if they come anywhere near the office door. He sits there and eats his food and no matter who passes by, he does not move until he's finish. D365: I Did it!!!!!

Today is the 365th photo. It's been fun. I asked myself, have my photography improve 300%?
Looking back at my first images, I would say yes. I've learn a few new techniques, viewed some amazing work by fellow photographers and I read my camera manual at least 4 times. What's next? I'm going on a 4 day silent retreat next week. This means no internet access or cell phone which means no twitter. I'm really looking forward to it. After I get back I may start another blog. who knows maybe another 365???.

What better way to end my 365 project than with my favorite subject.

Such a gorgeous summer day in the bay area today. A day like this is too nice to spend indoors, I went to the office and worked till 3. I then drove over to the Oakland Rose garden. It is such a beautiful and peaceful place. When I lived in Oakland, I use to visit the garden at least twice a week. Great place to exercise (lots of stairs) or just sit and read a book.

I saw these beautiful roses at the garden.There was no name plate for this rose, but it was planted between the "Ingrid Bergman" and "George Burns" roses. Very Pretty.

I woke early this morning and drove over to San Francisco hoping to catch the fog over the Golden Gate bridge. I got there and there was too much fog. Since I was already on that side of the bay I to drove to Sausalito and had a Caramel Macchiato at Starbucks. I then drove back across the bay and took a nice stroll around Lake Merritt. As I was walking I notice these flowers near one of the benches. I like how the sun create nice shadows on the petals. As I was taking a few shots, this little fellow landed on the flower. I snap a few more then left him to tend to his job. A good morning indeed. : )

If you want to see some pretty cool kites, Cesar Chavez park is the place to go. Highland Kites are out there every weekend displaying some of there most interesting kites. Below are some of the kites that were in flight today. The favorite was the crab kites. They don't necessarily fly, but instead hover close to the ground moving horizontally like real crabs. They were pretty cool. They didn't have kites like this when I was a kid.

Beautiful summer day here in Cali. Spent most of the day at home just relaxing. Later on I decided to go out for ride up to the basin. On my way back I found this nice spot near the marsh and decide to park and watch the sunset. The sunset was not that great but the after glow was pretty cool. I like how orange glow blends into blue sky. This view reminds me of the following line from Janis Ian song "Here comes the night"

My sister woke me up this morning to see this beautiful sunrise. This is the best one I've seen all summer. I slipped my sweats on over my pj's, hop in the car and drove down the road to get a clear shot. The sky was gorgeous. On the opposite side of the road directly behind me, the sky was a nice blue with pinkish clouds. I couldn't decide which one I like best so I posted my favorite three. Great way to start my day.

Went on a photo outing to Napa with my photography meetup group. The weather was gorgeous! Our first stop was Vine Village, which is a residential 25-acre ranch for people with special needs. Very beautiful place and so much to photograph. My favorite point of interest was the egret and blue heron rookery. Although the egrets were a bit shy this morning, I was able to capture one in flight. He flew directly over my head and I had little time to focus and snap the shutter. I wish the image could have been more sharp. Around 12:30, we all left to get lunch, shot some more scenery and ended the day at Adastra organic farm for a little wine tasting and more photography. Perfect way to end the summer.
